Bela Lugosi - Elegia

A personal tribute to Bela Lugosi, on the anniversary of his death.

Not the most conventional video I have ever done, but then Bela is far from conventional. A great actor, a unique presence, a tragic hero and complex human forever underrated or, IMO, misunderstood. There will never be another Bela Lugosi and there never was anyone who could quite match the singularity of his acting and presence even though many would place other actors above him in talent or style. Too theatrical, too Hungarian, Bela did not fit into the American movie neatly. Yet while he created and thrived in a niche of weird horror, he was much more. It was hard to clip this video-- he is so expressive, often talking rapidly-- yet so many scenes he is still with a look, a twitch, a grin saying a thousand things more. The same looks, the same smirks repeated throughout decades-- this was the personality-- yet the different styles, the particular choice to frown instead of scowl, the genuine laughter side by side with a bitter smirk; this is talent, and a skilled actor who cares to embody even the smallest parts in the least important movies with real passion.

I hope this tribute does some justice to all his wonderful roles and range, and shows my love of the man in all his identities.
