M6.1 earthquake hits off the coast of Crete and Karpathos, Greece

A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as Magnitude 6.1 hit off the coast of Crete.

The agency is reporting a depth of 38 km.

The epicenter was located 150 km south earth of Karpathos.

About 3000 inhabitants live there.

The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

There are no people living within 100 km.
