Marche en Rondeau - Prelude to "Te Deum" (H. 146) by Marc-Antoine Charpentier; Hari Bayani, organ
Marche en Rondeau
Prelude to “Te Deum” H. 146 (“Thee, O God, We Praise”)
By Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704)
Hari Bayani, organ
Recorded Thursday, June 24, 2021
The Community Church of Honolulu (CCH)
Originally recorded as a postlude for use in CCH’s online worship services
For this recording, I employed the French Baroque style of “notes inégales,” i.e. playing a succession of written straight eighth notes in a more dotted rhythm (usually understood as long-short, very rarely short-long).
Marc-Antoine Charpentier biography: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marc-Antoine_Charpentier
Charpentier’s “Te Deum” (H. 146): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Te_Deum_(Charpentier)
Sheet music in the public domain: https://imslp.org/wiki/Te_Deum%2C_H.146_(Charpentier%2C_Marc-Antoine) [I used an organ transcription edited by a certain “Ronia”]
The “Te Deum” prayer/hymn (origins and translations): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Te_Deum
All images of Christ Pantocrator (“Christ Almighty”) from Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christ_Pantocrator
1. Christ Pantocrator in the church of Santa Pudenziana in Rome, Roman mosaic, c. 410 AD
2. Jesus Christ Pantocrator (Detail from the deesis mosaic in Hagia Sophia, Istanbul)
3. The Christ Pantocrator of St. Catherine’s Monastery at Sinai, 6th cent. AD
4. Christ Pantocrator mosaic from the dome of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem
5. Christ Pantocrator inside the Sacred Heart Church (Berlin), c. 1900
6. Roof fresco of Christ Pantocrator, Nativity of the Theotokos Church, Bitola, North Macedonia
7. Christ Pantocrator in the Orthodox Church of St. Alexander Nevsky, Belgrade, Serbia
Even though the Christ Pantocrator icon is mostly associated with Eastern Orthodox Christian / Byzantine iconography and has virtually no connection to French Baroque sacred music, I chose these regal, majestic images because of their sober, dignified manner, perfectly complementing Charpentier’s opening march.
