Since it has been a while since I recorded my improvisations, I took some time recently to record EIGHT improvisations in one session (four on piano, four on organ). The recordings I make serve a dual purpose, first, to enhance my church’s weekly online worship services, and second, for my personal YouTube channel.

For my church online services, the more introspective piano improvisations are to be used over the next few weeks as preludes; likewise, the exuberant, sometimes bombastic organ improvisations are to be used as postludes. On my YouTube channel, I have paired my improvisations into four piano-organ sets, and will publish them over the next several days. My improvisations are rough and ready – I prepared absolutely nothing in advance, and for me, improvising is my utmost means of musical expression. I enjoy the daring, the thrill, the sheer fun and uncertainty that it takes to improvise. My Impromptus all show influences of Baroque, Classical, Romantic and even modern styles woven together.

Notes on editing: the church that I work at has a very dry, unforgiving acoustic, due to extensive carpeting and the building’s modern architecture, giving the music an abrupt, almost “stuffy” sound, due to lack of room resonance. Sound purists may disagree with me, but I added extra reverb to soften the timbre and create warmth that is characteristic of larger, more resonant spaces.

Also, as I currently only have access to my (inexpensive, lower quality) smartphone for recording, it was not practical to record video for the organ improvisations (only for the piano). The organ console is located off to the right side of the altar, and is too far away from the source of the sound (front of the church) for me to be able to simultaneously capture good audio and a video of myself playing.
