Cardinal Tetra Care – Everything You Need To Know For Thriving Fish!

If you’re thinking about keeping Cardinal Tetras, this complete care guide covers everything I’ve learned from over two years of keeping them in my own planted aquariums. These stunning little fish are becoming increasingly popular in the hobby, and for good reason—they’re peaceful, colourful, and a great addition to many community tanks.

In this video, I break down whether Cardinal Tetras are truly beginner-friendly, and why the answer can actually depend on where you live. In places like the UK and across Europe, most Cardinals are captive-bred, meaning they’re already adapted to typical home aquarium conditions. This makes them far easier to care for compared to wild-caught fish, which are still more common in places like the US and often require softer, more acidic water.

I also cover tank size, group size, and how to create the right setup for them. While many recommend a minimum tank size of 60 x 30 cm, I’ve found they can work in slightly smaller setups if done properly. Since they’re a social species, keeping them in groups of at least 10 will help them feel more secure and bring out more natural behaviour.

When it comes to aquascaping, Cardinal Tetras really thrive in planted tanks with plenty of cover. In my experience, they tend to spend a lot of time in the lower half of the tank and will retreat into plants when there’s increased activity, so adding dense planting or hardscape in those areas makes a big difference.

I also go over ideal water parameters, including temperature, pH, and hardness, along with why stability is more important than chasing exact numbers. Their natural habitat can vary quite a bit depending on the season, but softer, slightly acidic water is generally best.

Behaviour-wise, Cardinals are calm, peaceful fish that work well in community tanks. I’ve kept mine with a wide range of species including rasboras, gouramis, Corydoras, shrimp, and even algae eaters without any major issues. They’re not particularly aggressive and tend to loosely group together rather than tightly shoal most of the time.

Finally, I cover feeding—what I use as staple foods, what I feed as treats, and how they interact with food in a community tank. One thing I’ve noticed is that they’re happy to feed from the substrate, which makes them easy to care for alongside other species.
