I was testing out using a simple paper cone and sewing needle to see what kind of sound I could get out of them.

It works reasonably well as you can see. I was just rotating the platter by hand of course so the speed is all over the show and the bangs and explosions you hear in the background are because I was doing this on bonfire night.

Unfortunately, although you do get sound you don't get very loud sound. Not loud enough to be heard over a clattering steam engine anyway. Now I know why they use silent electric motors to spin turntables!
