When someone doesn't show up for court, or doesn't pay a court fine on time, the judge in the case will oftentimes create a bench warrant for that person's arrest. If that person is later pulled over by police for a traffic infraction or any other reason, and the police run the person's name or driver's license through their computer, they will see the outstanding bench warrant and arrest them.
If you have an outstanding bench warrant, it is highly advisable to hire an attorney to get the bench warrant quashed for you (clear your bench warrant). If you don't have a felony charge, then normally your attorney can appear in court on your behalf, and you don't even have to show up. And if you don't have a long history of failure to appear, then judges are usually agreeable to clearing the bench warrant when properly requested by a skilled an experienced criminal defense attorney.
