During a job interview, a potential employer has the right to ask interviewees about many aspects of their past, including their criminal history. Any criminal history at all, even a misdemeanor conviction, could be a potential red flag for employment, no matter the type of job that is being applied for. However, depending on the crime, some career paths will be virtually impossible to secure because of the professional code and ethics that are required for that particular job.
For instance, someone who has a misdemeanor criminal history of theft or embezzlement, will probably not be able to get a job working in the financial sector, such as a bank teller, loan officer, or an accountant. And a misdemeanor drug conviction will probably make it impossible to get a job in the medical field, such as a doctor, a nurse, or a pharmacist.
The only way to prevent a misdemeanor criminal record from derailing your future employment, is to get an expungement or a record seal. Expungements and record seals erase your past convictions, and allow people with a misdemeanor criminal history to get a fresh start.
Expungements and record seals are very complex though. In some situations they can be done in a matter of weeks, but they often take months to complete, even with the help of an attorney, and a single mistake could set you back to the very beginning. So a skilled and experienced record seal or expungement attorney is absolutely necessary to ensure that any potential red flags are successfully removed from an applicants criminal record.
