I composed IISA PA LAMANG for Ms. NORA AUNOR from the collection of lyrics entrusted to me by the award winning writer and film director, Mr. Jose Javier Reyes. Ms. Nora Aunor herself asked me to be the musical director of the film, Greatest Performance, and we explored the possibility of having an original theme song for the movie. Coincidentally, while film production was ongoing, Ms. Nora Aunor was also recording five or six of my original compositions for an album I was producing for Bella Tan’s Universal Records, and Iisa Pa Lamang was a part of that album. To drum up interest for her upcoming movie, Nora debuted Iisa Pa Lamang on her long-running TV musical variety show, Superstar. After her performance, numerous calls came pouring in to ask what that original song was all about and it proved to be an excellent teaser for the movie. SeveraI scenes showing Nora Aunor singing my songs had already been shot. Our composer-singer tandem became a gratifyingly solid one. Nora and I would travel to JRS (Jun Regalado Studio) to work feverishly together anticipating what would be Nora’s Greatest Performance. Unfortunately due to some unforeseen circumstances, the whole deal was called off. I still have the recordings although the quality of some has deteriorated badly through the years. After the film was shelved, I encouraged Ms. Nora Aunor to immediately release Iisa Pa Lamang as a single because my guts were telling me that it would become a huge hit. However, probably plagued by frustration and exhaustion, she was not able to do so. And so it was that Greatest Performance the movie, remained unreleased. And its theme song would land on someone else’s lap one or two years later. As I unabashedly predicted then, IISA PA LAMANG became a monster hit, undisputedly the biggest hit of MS. JOEY ALBERT!
