VERNI VARGA - Take Five - For The Record August 7, 1993 - Folk Arts Theater
Danny Tan's Throwback #183
FOR THE RECORD 2: This historic concert was staged at the Folk Arts Theater on August 7, 1993. Broadcast over RPN-9 with no commercial breaks, this was produced by Full House Productions of Ms. Wilma Galvante for Toyota Motors Philippines. The inimitable cast of performers included MARTIN NIEVERA, VERNI VARGA, ZSA ZSA PADILLA, REGINE VELASQUEZ, ARIEL RIVERA and GARY VALENCIANO.
Mr. Francis Albert Gomez, a very close friend of Ms. Verni Varga, paid tribute to her legendary performance of Dave Brubeck's TAKE FIVE, "one of the most difficult jazz pieces ever as it is 20% lyric-driven and 80% improvisation. No two performances were alike every time Verni Varga performed this as the improvisations that she rendered were based on her mood. Verni Varga's vocal acrobatics coupled with her sensual, vampy movements made her not only The Queen of Jazz and The Vamp, but also the Queen of Showmanship. It was her spirit that was really unmatched -- The Sexiest, Most Sensual, Jazz singer in the history of the industry... Verni Varga has been reigning supreme as one of the Queens of live performances in the Philippines since the late 70s up to the late 2010s, up until the time when she retired from the business after an illustrious career that spanned almost four decades. "I've been singing this song for so many years...and since then nobody has ever attempted to do this song..." this was Verni Varga's spiel before she performed this song. I'm just so proud of my Ate Inday...known as Verni Varga...she is the kindest, sweetest, and most generous person ever."
