JAYA, ROBERT SEÑA - BUKTOT AKO'Y BUKTOT, HAROT AKO'Y HAROT - Rama At Sita - February 4, 1999
Danny Tan's Throwback #180
February 4, 1999: JAYA and ROBERT SEÑA mesmerized the audience with their devilish portrayals of Surpanakha and Ravana, respectively, ably supported by the "three evil sisters" - Annie Nepomuceno, Cecille Aurellado and Sheila Francisco, loyal subjects of Ravana and Surpanakha - and Arlene Borja as Maricha, Ravana's minion..
The production number opened with a musical dialogue between Ravana and Maricha (music by Danny Tan from the lyrics of Roy Iglesias), immediately segued to the original song of Ravana, "Buktot...Ako'y Buktot", composed by Ryan Cayabyab and Bien Lumbera. I created a contrapuntal song for Surpanakha, "Harot...Ako'y Harot", the verses of which were based on the original melody and chord progressions of the verses of "Buktot...Ako'y Buktot". I expanded "Harot..." in such a way that both "Buktot..." and "Harot..." would not clash when sung together. This turned out to be a very riveting re-interpretation of the original "Buktot...".
BACKSTORY: Produced by Ms. Ayen Munji-Laurel's SK Entertainment, RAMA AT SITA - The Musical premiered on February 4, 1999 at the University Theater, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City. The musical was a huge hit! Every performance was fully packed!
Pre-production of RAMA AT SITA - The Musical involved the production team traveling to India through the generosity of SK Entertainment. We immersed ourselves in Indian culture by visiting Taj Mahal, The Pink City of Jaipur, Ganges River, New Delhi, Mumbay, and other notable places. We tremendously enjoyed this once in a lifetime experience! Thank you, Ayen and Chang!
