Celestino Piaggio (1886-1931) was an Argentine Composer. He belonged to a family of musicians in which his brother, Leonidas (cello; 1887-1942) and his sister, Elsa Piaggio de Tarelli (piano; 1906-1993) stood out. Like these, Celestino began his studies of piano and violin under the guidance of his father, Víctor. The solid preparation acquired from him allowed him, at the age of ten, to begin his career as a violinist in the orchestra of one of the many Italian opera companies that toured the interior of the country.
In 1900 he settled with his family in the Argentine capital, enrolling in the Buenos Aires Conservatory of Music. After being examined by the founder and director of this house of studies, Alberto Williams, he entered the upper classes dictated by Julián Aguirre (piano), Andrés Gaos (violin), Carlos Marchal (ensemble) and Williams himself (harmony, counterpoint , composition and orchestral conducting).
In 1908 he travelled go Paris under a scholarship. There he entered the Schola Cantorum studying harmony with Saint Reguier, counterpoint with Groz, composition with Vincent d'Indy, organ with Cinand and Décaux and Gregorian chant with Gastoué.
On vacation in 1914 he traveled to Romania. The outbreak of the First World War turns the short holiday trip into a forced five-year residence in Bucharest. This hazardous situation forces him to integrate into the new community and seek a place in it. Piaggio began to give music lessons for a living, as he had lost the benefits of the scholarship corresponding to the European Grand Prix. Thanks to his conditions, he did not take long to awaken the interest and admiration of the artistic environment of the place. He gave recitals and was appointed a pianist of the Royal Court, a member of the jury of the Bucharest Conservatory and founded both the Critical Teatrala, Muzicala, Literara si Artistica (1918) and the Asociatiei Generale Muzicala din România orchestra for the Amicii Orbilor society (1918).
In 1919, he went back to Paris to finish his studies with d'Indy. And the year after also to finish his studies of directing with Artur Nikisch in Germany. After graduating, he received numerous offers from Bucharest so he could eventually stay there, but Alberto Williams started offering him a position at the Conservatorio Nacional.
On February 23, 1921, he arrived in Argentina starting a rich and fruitful activity not only as a teacher and interpreter, but also in the organization and management of events in the discipline. As a teacher, on March 1, 1921, he took over the chairs of piano, harmony, counterpoint, and composition at the Buenos Aires Conservatory of Music. In 1924, after signing the contract promised by Williams, he became deputy director of the institute and participated in the profits of the institute. This contractual relationship remained in force until 1931, the year of Piaggio's death.
