Keith Richards dreamt the famous riff and then rolled out of bed and recorded it. Funny thing is he meant for the riff heard round the world to be a horn section and he was worried he may have inadvertently ripped it off. Thank goodness the horns didn’t take. When he showed it to singer Mick Jagger. The frontman went nuts. He wrote the lyrics and they became the greatest middle finger to the man lyrics in the rock canon and then to top it all off The song got banned for being too suggestive! Pirate Radio stations started playing it and then it blew up! The story of a true 60s classic next on Professor of Rock.

Many have called it the most influential guitar riff ever played and it was most certainly an explosion on radio that ignited hundreds if not thousands of bands... It all started in the year 1965 When The Rolling Stones released “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction"- an instant smash with that irresistible guitar riff, and anthemic ‘shout it out loud’ chorus that captivated the social spirit of the mid-60s.

The song was neither grammatically, or politically correct, with its double-negative title, and its audacious lyrics about sexual frustration and the machination of commercialism. A middle finger to the man.

It was the first #1 song for The Rolling Stones in America- topping the pop chart for 4 weeks, and ranked as the 3rd biggest single of the year by Billboard Magazine behind another song with a parenthetical title “(I Can’t Help Myself) Sugar Pie Honey Bunch” at the #2 spot, and Sam Sham & the Pharaohs “Wooly Bully” finishing with top supremacy for 1965. One of the greatest top 5s ever.

“Satisfaction” went to #1 in Ireland, Australia, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, South Africa, and Austria. It was the 4th number-one single in the UK for the Rolling Stones.

When Satisfaction first came out, commercial radio stations in Europe wouldn’t touch it, labeling the song as “too suggestive.” However, pirate radio stations that did not have a valid license to broadcast were all over the song, and the outlaw airplay generated such a huge buzz for the song, that eventually every station with a stick was forced to play it.

(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction was another classic song that was conceived during the R.E.M. sleeping phase. It’s incredible how often that has happened. On May 6th, 1965, The Rolling Stones were scheduled to perform for about 3,000 people at Jack Russell Stadium in Florida, as one of the stops on their first US tour. An altercation broke out between police & some of the concertgoers. Some 200 fans were involved, and the melee forced the Stones to abort their performance.
