Wrote CORNY LYRIC When DRUNK…Wrote Even WORSE Lyric When SOBER…It Still Hit #1! | Professor of Rock

Coming up, an interview with one of the greatest drummers in rock and roll history, Stewart Copeland of the Police on their first two #1 hits, Message in a Bottle and Walking on the Moon. These two songs put Sting, Andy Summers, and Stewart Copeland on the map. Walking on the Moons is definitely a candidate for the most atmospheric hit of its time and it came to Sting when he was sloppy drunk. He said he came up with the worst song title ever -- Walking Round the Room -- for it, so he changed it up when he was sober... and it somehow ended up with an even worse title he says! And Message in a Bottle is one of the most played in rock history and Stewart says he has one big regret about it decades later. Get the story of 2 classics in our exclusive interview, next on Professor of Rock!

So I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations, where featured artists take us for a deep dive and explore their greatest songs and albums. Insight you won’t find anywhere else. Today we’ve got another great interview with one of the greatest drummers in rock and roll history Another fun conversation with the back beat behind the legendary rock trio the Police. Stewart Copeland who along with bassist-singer Sting and Guitarist Andy Summer put out 5 of the finest albums of their time with Outlanders Damoure, Regatta De Blanc, Zenyatta Mondattta, Ghost in the Machine, and Synchronicity. Today we’re going back to 1979 to their sophomore record Regatta De Blanc… and the album's key tracks… Including a song that is a true candidate for the most atmospheric song of its time. Walking on the Moon. With dark bass undertones and it’s skipping hi-hat the song is a mindbender for sure. Sting actually created the song when he was three sheets to the wind. Sloppy drunk one night after getting sloshed with a composer friend in Munich. He came back to his hotel, barely able to get into bed… He was slumped against the wall and the riff came into his head. So apparently he got up and was walking, really teetering around the room to try and concentrate and he started muttering exactly what he was doing… He started singing Walking around the room.

Luckily the next morning he remembered the riff and song lyrics from the night before and he wrote it down. He felt that walking round the room was a stupid title for a song so he changed it to Walking on the Moon a title that Sting feels is even worse than the first one he came up with. The song is set in space, but it's an allegory for how Sting felt when he was on the road, confined to hotel rooms and stages as the world kept turning. In his autobiography, Sting implies that the song was partially inspired by an early girlfriend. He said Deborah Anderson was my first real girlfriend... walking back from Deborah's house in those early days would eventually become a song, for being in love is to be
