U2's next stop on their tour of various European summer festivals was the Phoenix Park Festival, or "A Day At The Races" at the Phoenix Park Racecourse in their hometown of Dublin. As always, they put in a special performance for their one and only home, featuring multiple guests throughout the night. Steve Wickham, who has played violin for U2 many times before both on stage and in the studio, joins the band for performances of Sunday Bloody Sunday and The Electric Co., giving two fantastic versions instrumentally. Annie Lennox also joins Bono on vocals for a duet performance of 40, just as she did at the previous show in Werchter. As for the boys themselves, this is a hot-and-cold performance, with some amazing performances mixed in with sloppier ones. Edge and Adam have some tuning issues on some songs, notably Two Hearts Beat As One. Bono is also his classic unstable self in the early 80s, although he still delivers some fantastic moments. Also enjoy a little sing-along of Happy Birthday for The Edge, who celebrated his a week before the show. All of this is heard on a good sounding recording, delivering a great experience to a listener and providing a perfect snapshot of an early U2 performance before they truly took off.
