Alder Lake - Turnwood, NY - September 22, 2023

During the years I camped and worked at Onteora Scout Reservation we had a satellite camp at Alder Lake. Troops would hike from OSR, about 10 miles away, spend a night or two at Alder Lake, then head back to OSR. It was a great trek and quite enjoyable.

Alder Lake is man-made and was created by Samuel D. Coykendall, a railroad and canal shipping tycoon, and he also built an impressive manor house to entertain his guests. It was still there when the Scouts owned the property, but in later years the property was sold to the State of New York, which let the place rot until it was torn down. For more on Alder Lake history visit my site https://www.billcotter.com/onteora/alder-lake/index.htm.

For this trip I used my new DJI Mini 3 drone to capture some views of the house ruins and the lake. I'm still trying to figure out how to fly it so I was happy when it landed safely and not in the lake.

A funny note - at the entrance to the property the state has erected a signboard with maps of the area and a brief history of the manor house. As I read it I thought it sounded familiar. Turns out they had printed part of my own history of the camp and hung it up there!
