Cotter family home movies - 1965
Here's another reel of movies my mother and father took in 1965. It starts with our annual summer trip to Lake Hopatcong, NJ. We all loved going there and having fun in the water, exploring the local trails, and visiting the many local amusement parks. The park listed here as "unknwon" has been identified as Fairy Tale Forest on Oak Ridge, NJ.
On the second Lake Hopatcong clip we were joined by the Argenzio's, family friends who we spent several vacations with. When we stopped going to Lake Hopatcong for some reason and switched to the Adirondacks they were with us for many of those years.
There's also a lengthy segment of Pope Paul VI at Yankee Stadium on October 4, 1965. I know my mother was thrilled to be there, and I still have her tickets and souvenir program from the night.
We also visited the United States Military Academy in West Point. I recall we went to a football game after we saw all the cadets marching. And I believe Army won so it was a very happy crowd.
Next was the annual Christmas filming, which entailed a bar of floodlights so bright we couldn't see for about a week afterwards. We would come down the stairs from our bedrooms and try to escape the light show, but dad was pretty good at following us around.
The last clip is ice skating on Loft's Lake in our hometown of Baldwin, NY. The whole town seemed to turn out for skating there. The lake doesn't freeze over now but it was such great fun back then. None of us Cotters really mastered ice skating but none of us would miss a chance to go each year.
The original 8mm films were scanned on a frame-by-frame Moviestuff Mk II scanner. I look forward to redoing them and improving them when my upgrade kit for the scanner arrives, as it should help with some of the darker segments.
It was great reliving some happy moments with my folks and my brothers. One disappointment in the 1964 and 1965 films was next to nothing from the World's Fair. This 1965 reel had a very short and completely over-exposed segment of the performers at the Mexico Pavilion. So much for my hopes of spotting myself at the Fair. :(
