Ferrari are engaged in a close championship battle with Red Bull in 2022. This is a stark change in their fortunes compared to the previous two seasons. Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto, in an interview with the BBC, spoke about their main objective

Why Ferrari’s Objective Isn’t “To Win The Championship”

Binotto started off by revealing their objective

“We set our objectives to be back competitive in 2022”

“So our objective is to be competitive, not to win the championship”

He explained why changing their objective would be wrong

“It would be completely wrong to turn that into: ‘Let’s try to win the championship because we are so competitive’”

“Being competitive is one fact; becoming world champion is another level of task”

He then explained the reasoning behind this approach

“[Saying] that is maybe to take off some pressure from the team, but also I think it would be wrong as management to change objectives from the ones we gave them”

“No doubt what we intend to do is to try to open a cycle – become world champion, and not only once; try to stay there. But I think it will take time”

He signed off by clarifying that they still have the ambition to become world champions

“It doesn’t mean we will not do it. Maybe we will do it as soon as possible”

“The ambition is there. Each single person working for Ferrari has the ambition”

“More important is to let them focus on our process of continuous improvement”

Teammate Yuki Tsunoda is “not trusting the FIA. Every time it’s super inconsistent” [Motorsport]

“It is a completely different style of race director. I’m not saying fully negative things”

“But a lot of things, other things, racing incidents or traffic management and all those things, I think Michael Masi had more experience if I compare”

Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel added that “what we’re missing now is the experience that Michael [Masi] brought to the track” [Independent]

“He’s done it for so long and grew up with it”

Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko suggested that “Max [Verstappen] is the most constistent. In terms of speed, Max is the number one” [RTL]

“[For Sergio Perez to become the champion] he has to have the speed and beat Max clearly on the track”
