1980 Rock Island, El Reno, OK - After the Shutdown
1980 was a year that forever changed the lives of Rock Island employees. At the end of March, the Rock Island ceased operations. Almost all employees were without jobs, with the exception of a few employees retained for equipment and facilities shutdown and final accounting. All frames in this video were taken in 1980 except the very last. The last frame is an image of the one-of-a-kind Rock Island GP7 (1983) leased to move equipment to interchange points for final distribution. RI locomotives and cars were either sold or returned to lessor.
It is difficult to imagine the trauma of the very last day of the Rock Island - from train crews, dispatchers, agents, train order operators to office personnel at every point on the railroad.
It would take several years of hard work to completely divest the remnant of the Rock Island of all equipment and property.
We are preserving railroad historical film, photos and stories in the decades 1950 to 1990. We would appreciate your "Like" and "Subscribe."
