Penmaenmawr Walk: Town Centre & Beach【4K】

Located in Conwy County Borough, and on the north coast of Wales, is the town of Penmaenmawr.

The town's name is Welsh for 'head of the great stone', in reference to the Penmaen-mawr Mountain which separates it from the neighbouring town of Llanfairfechan. Prior to the 19th century, the settlement was a collection of villages, namely Penmaenan and Pant Yr Afon in the west and Dwygyfylchi and Capelulo to the east.

In 1830 quarrying began with the opening of Penmaen Quarry. As this industry grew, workers and their families flocked to Penmaenmawr. This was aided by the arrival of the railway in 1849 which not only provided transportation for people, but for the quarried stone. Today the station is situated on the North Wales Coast Line which runs between Crewe (in England) and Holyhead.

During the mid 19th century, Penmaenmawr also grew as a seaside resort. This was aided in 1855 by the first of several visits from Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone. Hailing from Liverpool originally, Gladstone is said to have bathed in the sea and walked in the hills here. His endorsement of the town helped to elevate its status as a fashionable 'watering place'.
