Federal Delta - Late Night Saltie Needs Some Coke
Here is the saltwater ship Federal Delta arriving in the Twin Ports of Duluth and Superior at 3am on June 26, 2022. She was in port to pick up petroleum coke from the Midwest Energy Terminal on the Superior side of the harbor. After loading, she was scheduled to make the trip to Montreal, then begin a voyage overseas to deliver her cargo (to a port not yet specified).
The video starts as the Federal Delta enters the Duluth shipping canal, then passing under the Aerial Lift Bridge. After passing under the bridge, the tugboat Missouri and pilot boat Sea Bear join up with her. Two personnel from Sea Bear climb a rope ladder up the side of the Federal Delta, the use a lowered set of stairs to board the ship. At least one of the personnel was a qualified pilot who would assist with docking the Federal Delta at Midwest Energy. All visiting saltwater ships require a locally-qualified pilot who is familiar with the harbor. (Lake ships usually carry their own qualified pilots, as they dock much more frequently.)
We didn't receive a salute from the Federal Delta for this arrival, mainly because of the late hour during which she arrived. Also, saltwater ships tend to be less reliable for saluting when visiting Duluth... but the Federal Delta did provide a salute for her departure. You'll have to stay tuned to this channel if you want to see her departure and hear her salute!
The 656-foot bulk carrier Federal Delta was constructed in 2018 in Oshima, Japan and sails for Fednav Shipping under the flag of the Marshall Islands. Her six cargo holds have a total capacity 20,789 tons. She had 4 deck cranes capable of lifting 35 metric tons each, used primarily for loading and unloading any package cargo. She is powered by a B&W 5S50ME-B9 5-cylinder diesel engine producing 10,730 bhp (brake horsepower), giving her a top speed of 16.1mph.
