Midhurst Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of West Sussex, and around 10 miles north of Chichester, is the town of Midhurst.
Geographically, Midhurst is situated adjacent to the River Rother - a tributary of the River Arun, in the South Downs National Park. Its name derives from Old English for 'middle wooded hill'.
Following the Norman Conquest, a castle was built on St Ann's Hill. Immediately to its west, the town began to grow around it. Only earthworks and ruins remain of the castle today, although the Church of St Mary Magdalene and St Denys is situated within the former grounds of the castle. The church (seen in detail at the 11-and-a-half minute mark) has a history going back to the late 13th century, although it was largely rebuilt in the Perpendicular style in the early 15th century.
Just east of the town centre are the ruins of Cowdray House. This was built from circa 1520 on the site of an older manor house from the late 13th century. Its construction was ordered by Sir David Owen, uncle to Henry VII, and was later acquired by the Montagues - a wealthy and influential family during the Tudor and Stuart eras. In 1793 a fire destroyed a significant portion of the house, leaving it in a state of partial ruin to this day, albeit surrounded by picturesque gardens.
In 1864 a railway station opened in Midhurst with a line connecting it to Petersfield in Hampshire to the west. In 1866 a second connection opened up with a separate line heading east to Pulborough. The station eventually closed to passengers in 1955, and to freight in 1964. Today, public transport to Midhurst consists of direct buses from Chichester, Guildford, Worthing and various other nearby settlements.
