Arundel Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of West Sussex, and around 10 miles east of Chichester, is the town of Arundel.

Following the Norman Conquest of 1066, William the Conqueror gave Arundel, and a third of Sussex, to Roger de Montgomery, who built a wooden castle here. It was placed at a strategic point on the bank of the River Arun, and was rebuilt in stone during the 12th century.

During the medieval era, Arundel grew as a port and market town whose industries included wool, dyed cloth, rope and timber.

In 1253 a Dominican friary was established by the River Arun with its own wharf and mud slipway. In 1538, as part of the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the land and property belonging to the 'Black Friars' were seized and granted to Henry Fitzalan, 12th Earl of Arundel.

In circa 1380 the Parish Church of St Nicholas was built on the site of an earlier church (seen just after the 22-minute mark). This originally served as both a monastic and a parish building, with the nave being used by the townspeople and the chancel by the priests’ college. After the Reformation, the chancel became the property of the Fitzalan family of Arundel Castle.

During the English Civil War, the Siege of Arundel took place across a period of 2-and-a-half weeks from December 1643 to January 1644. A Royalist garrison of around 800 surrendered the castle to the Parliamentarians. In 1653 Parliament ordered the slighting of the castle. However, after ownership was later passed on to the Dukes of Norfolk, extensive work began on restoring the castle from 1787 onwards. Today, it serves as a tourist attraction, and has been used as a filming location, serving as a stand-in for Windsor Castle on multiple occasions.

In 1863 the railway arrived in Arundel courtesy of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway. Today, the station is situated on the Arun Valley Line which connects the West Coastway Line (between Southampton and Brighton) with the Brighton Main Line (between London and Brighton). Trains to and from London Victoria typically take around 90 minutes.

Across the road from the castle is Arundel Cathedral. Its construction was ordered in 1868 by Henry Fitzalan-Howard, 15th Duke of Norfolk. The cathedral is Roman Catholic, and was designed by architect Joseph Hansom (inventor of the Hansom Cab). Situated at around the highest point in town, the cathedral, as well as the castle, can be seen from many miles away.
