A Quick Overview Of My Newest Planted Tank! - Beginner-Friendly Aquarium Plants, Fish, And Shrimp!

My 70-litre (18 US gallon) planted aquarium is now 68 days old, and this setup has been a really interesting experiment so far. 🌿🐟

Instead of using aquasoil or a nutrient-rich substrate, this tank was built with an inert substrate to test how well aquatic plants can grow using water column fertilization alone. So far, the results have honestly exceeded my expectations, and plant growth has been amazing for such a young setup.

The tank is currently stocked with a school of lambchop rasboras and a growing colony of skittles neocaridina shrimp. The shrimp have been doing really well in this environment, and I’d still love to add some amano shrimp in the future to help with algae control and overall cleanup duties.

Originally, I planned for this aquarium to house an Apistogramma borellii, but finding one locally has been much harder than expected. I may end up ordering one online from Sims Tropical instead. Another idea I’ve been considering is moving the two honey gourami I recently picked up into this aquarium instead, which would also open the door to adding a group of panda corydoras later on.

The plants in this setup have only been growing for around a month, but some species are already exploding with growth. The Aponogeton ulvaceus has been especially impressive and is producing massive leaves at an incredible rate. The Cryptocoryne undulata has also surprised me because crypts are usually much slower growers, but this one has adapted really quickly.

I’ve also started adding emergent plants around the rim of the aquarium, including spider plants, pothos varieties, and a philodendron. I’m hoping these will help with nutrient uptake while also giving the tank a more natural jungle-style appearance over time.

One thing I definitely regret using in this setup is the Centurion wood. It’s already starting to break down and create debris throughout the aquarium. I can siphon it out during maintenance, but it’s becoming a hassle, especially since I probably wouldn’t have this issue with spider wood, mopani wood, or corbo wood instead.

Overall though, I’m really happy with how this planted tank is developing so far, and I’m excited to see how it looks in another few months. 🌱
