*ABOUT THIS FILM*
____________________

A formidable tawny owl pair

Bomber and his mate Luna are long-term residents of Fotherdale and they have brought up a number of tawny owl chicks here. They consider this territory to belong to them and are fiercely protective of it.

Tawny owls are fiercely territorial

These tawny owls defend their territory and their nests with vigour. This year Bomber and Luna pair have chosen to nest in a box known as Beech Stump, since I fashioned it out of a fallen beech. They will not tolerate any other owls to go anywhere near it. Just watch what happened when a barn owl tried to claim it!

Tawny owl aggression can lead to injuries

Tawny owls can be so aggressive they can get themselves into trouble. A tawny owl that lived here at Fotherdale in 2009 - and one that I often painted - once nearly lost an eye in a battle. At the time, I was very worried I had lost one of my best wildlife art models, but thankfully it did recover. Follow this link to see the one of the portraits I painted of this owl: https://www.robertefuller.com/acatalog/Tawny-Owl-on-Lookout-Print-ZTOL.html#SID=4

Tawny owls have lived at fotherdale for years

I've had tawny owls breeding here at Fotherdale for many years. Watch as I look back at photographs dating back to 2009 and identify the very first time I saw Bomber, in 2013.

Bomber the tawny owl's first partner

In the photograph you can see Bomber's first partner, an owl he paired with before he met Luna. This partner was a ginger-coloured female. I don't know what happened to her, but she was particularly beautiful.

How to identify different tawny owls

I hope this video will show you how I identify individual tawny owls. If you look carefully at the different feather markings on each owl and you can see how Bomber has a darker stripe of feathers on his face and a lot of white along his back. He also has very clearly defined markings on his tail -which is one of they ways I work out who's whoooo when he and Luna are cuddled up together in their nest box.

Tawny owl calls

This video includes the wide range of vocalisations made by tawny owls. Listen to their low 'ocarina' calls, the sound they make when calling to their mate, as well as the more typical owl hoots. Both male and female share the same vocabulary of sounds and it is a common misconception that when they are calling to one another the male is the one that says 'Too-wit' and the female 'Too-wooo'. It could be either owl making either sound and is just the way in which they communicate with one another whilst out of the nest. The 'Too-Wit' is effectively one owl saying 'Are you there' and the 'Too-Woo' is the other's reply: 'I'm here'.

Tawny owl love

Despite being a very formidable owl, Bomber is an attentive lover. Just look at the clips of him snugged up in the box with Luna. He seems to really enjoy the attention as she preens his feathers.

Looking forward to tawny owl eggs

This courtship is very important now. Last year Luna laid eggs in mid-February which is very early for tanwy owls- they usually lay towards the end of March - so she could repeat this and lay any day now!
