6. SOUNDBITE (French) Thomas Portes, French far left lawmaker:
"We need a political answer and our role is to pressure the French state. The French voice is important, Emmanuel Macron's voice is important in Europe and internationally and if President Macron has strong words, asks for an immediate cease-fire, and condemns war crimes - it will be important in the political landscape. It is on him to take initiatives. But I think a conference for a humanitarian truce is a bit confusing and not up to the task. What is needed is an immediate ceasefire and our president is bringing shame on our country by not asking for it."

9. SOUNDBITE (French) Herve (surname not given), protester:
"I think that the most important is that the massacre of civilians in Gaza stops. The solution can only be political. Israelis need to sit on a negotiating table and stop this impossible forcing, it is a dead end. A political solution with two states is the only way."
10. Wide of protestors chanting
11. SOUNDBITE (French) Elie Jousselin, locally elected communist official:
"We need a clear and firm voice calling for a cease-fire on both sides and to call for a two-state solution - that would be coexisting in good terms and that would bring us a fair and long-lasting peace. This is what most of the organizers of this demostration wish for. The French government needs to ask the Israeli far-right government firmly to cease their bombing and stop the blockade of Gaza which deprives the people of Gaza of necessary products for 15 years now. We also need a strong voice in France to avoid the importation of the conflict and against all the racist or antisemitic acts that we have seen in the past days."

STORYLINE:
Thousands of protesters gathered in central Paris on Saturday calling for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza amid the growing humanitarian crisis in the besieged enclave.
People waved Palestinian flags as they marched through the rain-dampened streets of the French capital.
The demonstrators also denounced French President Emmanuel Macron for not calling for a cease-fire, chanting “Macron, accomplice.”
Paris' police chief had authorized the march but vowed that any behavior deemed antisemitic or sympathetic toward terrorism would not be tolerated by police officers.
The Palestinian death toll in the Israel-Hamas war has reached 9,448, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza.
In the occupied West Bank, more than 140 Palestinians have been killed in violence and Israeli raids.
The UNRWA says 72 of its staff members have been killed.
More than 1,400 people in Israel have been killed, most of them in the Oct. 7 Hamas attack that started the fighting, and 242 hostages were taken from Israel into Gaza by the militant group.
Roughly 1,100 people have left the Gaza Strip through the Rafah crossing since Wednesday under an apparent agreement among the United States, Egypt, Israel and Qatar, which mediates with Hamas.
