“One of the things that I think is best about president and Mrs. Carter is my job is that I’m a high school guidance counselor and I work a lot with mental health, and I don’t think there was ever a greater champion for mental health than Mrs. Carter.”

“Mental health is more openly talked about, but I think she was a pioneer in that field. She was one of the first people to really say that, anybody who is not ok should be able to say they’re not ok and get the help that they need and deserve, and it took a lot for her to do that, and what a great legacy she leaves in that sense.”

STORYLINE:
Visitors flocked to the Carter Presidential Museum and Library in Atlanta Monday to pay their respects to Rosalynn Carter.

The former first lady died Sunday at the age of 96. The Carter Center said she died after living with dementia and many months of declining health.

“I think she was a role model for women past and present and I just wanted to come here today to honor her,” said Atlanta resident Pauline Jennett.

Visitors to the museum say they were inspired by Rosalynn Carter's human rights advocacy, mental health initiatives, and support of her husband.

“Mental health is more openly talked about, but I think she was a pioneer in that field," said Brendan Green, a visitor from Illinois.

Ceremonies celebrating the life of Rosalynn Carter will take place after the Thanksgiving holiday in Atlanta and Sumter County, Georgia.

Former president Jimmy Carter, now 99, remains at the couple’s home in Plains after entering hospice care himself in February.
