Relieving Neck Pain the Feldenkrais way

Doron gives examples of various Feldenkrais approaches to neck pain, all of which DO NOT activate the neck at all, but move other parts in relation to the neck, with minimal effort. Since the spine is an integrated whole, he explains, pain at the cervical end can be relieved by gently mobilizing the other end, in this case the pelvis and lower lumbar area, which will avoid triggering habitual movements of the neck. Lying supine on the ground and tilting the knees side to side, for example, addresses the organization of the cervical spine indirectly, without engaging the trunk musculature too much. If lying on your back is uncomfortable, you can mobilize your pelvis in a similar way lying on your side, sliding the top knee forward in relation to the bottom knee, which allows the entire trunk to roll easily. Doron also explains the importance of using the eyes to mobilize the head, and of keeping the head neck and shoulders undifferentiated in movement -- both keys to not exacerbating chronic neck pain.

Stay tuned for a video on the Pelvic Clock, another great lesson to use in this situation. In the meantime, try all these different movements gently and let Doron know what happens in the comments!
