Most people don't think about the shapes of the drills that they use. But from an engineering standpoint, these shapes, particularly the orientation of the handle, make all the difference. This short video from The Honest Carpenter will explain the two most common handle/grips for drills and drivers!

PISTOL-GRIP VS. MID-HANDLE (Which DRILL HANDLE Shape Is Better? What's The Difference...?)

Most drills and drivers fall into two categories for handle type: 1) Pistol-grip (or rear-handle), and 2) Mid-handle.

Pistol-grip drills have a handle all the way in the rear, and the back of the tool squares off or slopes down into it

Mid-handle drills have a handle more towards the center of the tool. They also often have a rounded bell in the back.

Pistol-grip drills are very front heavy. But, they placement of the handle at the back creates more a direct line of pressure. The hand, wrist and forearm are capable of delivering force more directly through the body of the tool, into the bit.

Mid-handle drills are very well-balanced, with the weight of the drill over the center of the hand. However, they transfer force less effectively, since they tend to lever downwards slightly when under pressure.

Mid-handle is the far more common grip for most drills and drivers. They can be used one-handed with ease.

Pistol-grip drills are better for applications where heavy drilling is required. But, they tend to be two-handed tools. Also, they often require the use of a detachable handle.
