Before Using Board Lumber...ALWAYS CHECK THIS! ("True Up" Board Ends / Check Board Ends For Square!)

On ply products, many carpenters trust factory edges to be square. But we're more wary of BOARD LUMBER. This short video from The Honest Carpenter will explain why, and it will also show how to check board ends for square, and "true" them up!

Most board lumber tends to come with 4 faces that have been planed and sanded. Furthermore, the widths will be accurate to industry standards, and the edges will be square or even coped.

However, board ends frequently are not square or even finished!

Some board lumber does come with squared ends--this is called P.E.T., or Precision End Trimmed Lumber.

Framing studs will often come with precision trimmed ends, so you can put it straight to use on job sites.

However, most lumber ends are ragged and possibly out of square.

Be sure to CHECK YOUR NEW BOARD ENDS FOR SQUARE!

You can do this with a try square, a speed square, or a larger rafter square (buzzard wing square).

Set the square along the bottom long edge of the board and pull it towards the end slowly. The upright leg of the square indicates a perfect 90 degrees to the long edge. If the board end protrudes or juts out at one corner, then the board is out of square!

"True up" or square the end of the board by using a miter saw or circular saw with a speed square to put a fresh, square cut on the end.

This will keep your projects square. And it'll also give a good square end to pull reliable measurements from.

Thanks for watching!
