Confidence in Footwork 💃 #shorts
A little confidence goes a long way in training 🙌
This was a BIG step for Wrigley. I asked her to target both her front and back paws on smaller platforms than she’s used to — at a time when she’s been feeling unsure about her footing.
And honestly? That’s exactly why I wanted to work on it. She loves platform work, it might be one of her favorite skills and she gets paid highly for it. Once I set these blocks down I knew she would want to try her best to get it.
It might not look like it on video, but these blocks are completely non-slip (thank you @fitpaws), which made a huge difference for her confidence. Wrigley also tends to stand on the very edge of platforms and makes herself really small that way, so using smaller targets spread out like this will help break that habit and learn to stabilize her stance a bit better.
This was just 4 sessions, about 3 minutes each. She already had the foundation skills (somewhat) to be able to do this, it was just about helping her feel safe and capable doing it.
This isn’t necessarily how I would go about this with another dog, but is what felt right in the moment for Wrigley! This is also a HUGE reason why I film all my sessions. You learn so much from watching things back 👏
I’m so proud of her for trying. We’ve still got work to do, but I’m really happy with how quickly she progressed 💛
