Check It Out for Reactivity ‼️ #shorts
If you’re working through reactivity with your dog and aren’t familiar with Leslie McDevitt’s Control Unleashed program — stop what you’re doing and go look it up right now!
I use so many of the pattern games from that program with my own dogs and client dogs. This “Look at That” game was a huge game changer for Wrigley and helped her feel more confident and in control.
Wrigley, like many dogs with reactive behavior, tends to get startled easily by the presence of another dog. Teaching her a cue for when another dog is nearby that she doesn’t initially see made a big difference. Now, when I see a dog first, I can let her know before it gets too close — and in the context of the Look at That or Engage/Disengage game, she can process and work through it much more easily. It helps her stay calm and builds her trust in me as her partner.
Here’s how to teach it:
✅ Start with something that’s just distracting for your dog, not triggering.
✅ Sneak in your cue (“check it out”) right before your dog looks.
✅ When they look, click and treat!
Then, once they understand, you can work up to their actual triggers.
I have a video on this Engage/Disengage or “Look at That” concept on my YouTube channel — if you’d like to take a look, it is titled “How to Stop Your Dog from Lunging and Barking - Reactive Dog” And if you want to dive deeper, definitely check out Leslie’s videos and books for more great pattern games.
