Want to boost your dog’s listening skills on walks? Try this — and get creative with it! The more silly, goofy, and EASY you make it, the more your dog will want to tune in when you ask.

A quick note: this works best if your dog already
• takes food or other reinforcer outside
• understands a marker cue
• has practiced offering basic attention in the house

If those pieces aren’t solid yet, build them indoors first. It will help for then transitioning outside.

This is especially helpful if you feel like you’ve lost some of your dog’s attention lately. In my case, I’d done a lot of walks where I was on calls or otherwise distracted. So Wrigley got into the habit of minding her own business instead of checking in with me. That one’s on me! And this is how I rebuild that engagement when I need it. It usually only takes one walk to get it back now.
