Managing the Environment for Your Reactive Dog 🐶 #shorts

If I have a dog that can display reactive behaviors, the last situation I am going to choose to put them into is a funnel with no easy escape options.

If the thought “it will probably be fine” goes through your mind, I might think again…

This path is a great example of one I would never willingly choose to go down with my reactive dog. Why? Here’s what goes through my head:

1. There is solid fencing on either side, which means my only out is forward or backwards.
2. It is extremely narrow with no room to create distance if you need it. Another dog comes down on a long line or flexi lead? Forget about it, we definitely will be approached.
3. I cannot see the other end. By the time I go far enough down it to actually see the other opening, I could be stuck with both options of escape blocked. NOPE!
4. I have both dogs with me. One who wants to create distance with other dogs, and one who will very much try to decrease distance in a not so nice way. Both need different things in that moment that a tight space doesn’t help.
5. The worst case scenario here is a dog fight and potentially my dogs and other people getting hurt. That is NOT worth it! I’ll just go around, thank you 😊

When you own or handle dogs with big feelings, it is important to be able to foresee the worst case scenarios, even when it’s not fun to think about. Being able to look at a given situation in front of you and think about the risk/reward value of it is extremely important. Determining if it is worth it or not.

In this case, no, going down this path would never be “worth it”, and it is not a shortcut to anywhere I’m trying to go. Could it go just fine? Yes! Could it result in a REALLY bad outcome? Also yes! To me and the dogs I had with me, that made it a very easy “Nope!”
