Irrigating with DIY PVC hand pump/ 3 HP diesel pumper

I designed and built this diesel pumping rig about 10 years ago in response to requests from Bolivian villagers for a way to irrigate their crops with the hand pumps I had installed in their wells. They had found it to be too difficult to irrigate more than a small garden by hand, and their corn crops were already dying from the drought conditions.

The pumper uses a little 3 HP Chinese diesel engine that can pump for 10-12 hours on a single gallon of diesel fuel! With the pulley reductions to a crank and a quick connect pumping arm it was well-matched to the pumps. It could be easily knocked down for transport by truck in about 5 minutes, and when assembled was portable so it could be rolled from well to well. That way it could be shared between families in the community and attached to any of the hand pumps we had helped them build and install in their wells.
I discovered that the water could be directed to the crop furrows using cheap plastic conduit that was available all over Bolivia. It was very light and had belled ends so it was easy to carry where needed and quickly assemble a pipe to carry the water to each furrow in sequence.

It was too late to save this crop, unfortunately, but they used it to great advantage in succeeding years, and it's still in use so far as I know. The hand pumps seemed quite capable of being used in this way without breaking down or wearing out, and the main issue that came up was the wells being pumped dry and having to move the unit around from well to well more often to let the wells recover.

Maybe this video will be of some inspiration to someone.
