Sleep Token is 34.3% METAL, Here's Why
Metal Scholars, today's video is all about numbers, just like Vessel says on Blood Sport, it's time to roll the numbers in. If we compute every single minute of song time and divide by the minutes of "pure metal" (really distorted guitars, low tuning, minor scales, ominous atmosphere, djent parts, etc) - that ratio will give us a better understanding of the time that Sleep Token spends strictly within the boundaries of metal. And the number shows us that 1/3 of the time they're actually playing 100% metal. I've shared various graphs showing the level of "metalness" across their discography and the results help us come to various conclusions and understand why metal purists/gatekeepers give ST a hard time. However, we see a trend on the rise, since Eden has a 37% average of metalness, maybe the next recdord they can bump it up to 45%? Hehe. Anyhow, Sleep Token is all about blending genres and not sticking to any in particular. Vessel states: "Do not get lost in genres, they disorient you" - that's why they like to keep moving and this is what makes Sleep Token special. Other bands do that but not to their extent. Even Spiritbox and Bad Omens are not as plural, meaning they stick to metal more, they "play it safer". What do you think about my theory? Do you agree? Please let me know in the comments below. Please sub, like, share with as many people as you can, to help me promote these videos to a wider audience, thank you so much for your support!
Just out of curiosity: the most metal song according to this analysis is Hypnosis, from TPWBYT. It has a 100% score! :)
