- the spirited play of children (to whom Christmas belongs) heard echoing from the upstairs nursery and spilling down into the parlour, as the day's toys are discovered and rediscovered with ever-new, ever-growing enchantment: a wooden train navigates the terrain of rug and chair-legs and unobliging grown-up feet; wooden blocks are stacked and toppled and stacked again; picture-book pages are turned over with rapturous care; the ribbons that had once ornamented the gifts become, in themselves, happy playthings
- the quiet flick & shuffle of cards, as a lively game of whist demonstrates that play is not just the domain of children and instead befits all who choose to partake in it, whatever the form
- the sprightly bustle of hostess with company, she in whom the season's virtue of generosity finds glad expression in the offering, and offering again, of refreshments always in miraculous abundance; she glides among guests as if tripping and whirling to the music of clinking punch-glasses, and clattering teaware, and cake-slicing, and candy-bowl filling
- the pleasantly softened strains of "Good King Wenceslas" heard drifting through the nearest wall, when a wandering group of family and friends stumble upon the piano, encourage a tutored but diffident accompanist into service, and gather 'round gaily in song (at 2:28:44)
- the purposeful tromping of boots through snow and the jingling, neighing traversing of hillsides by one-horse open sleigh, which serve as happy reminders that, just as all those who arrive here are embraced with the loving merriment of Christmas, so too are other travelers on their way to warm hearths and open arms
