List of Sounds:
- a Christmas fire's crackle and flicker, jovially joining the party-chatter with its unmistakable voice of warmth & comfort, a voice lively yet reassuring; it tells, perhaps, how that very hearth was visited, in the magic-hours of the night just passed, by a curious traveler with eyes brighter than embers, as nimble and evanescent as the oft-overlooked sprites and fairies, who conjured forth the very gifts for which the household's children most wished and placed them gingerly, with elfish lightness, among the nearby evergreen boughs
- laughter that only at Christmas can be called true revelry, whirling through rooms as if alive, as if made animate by the electric togetherness of a party at its joyous height, which becomes its own being (a singularity born of a multitude); one finds oneself almost helplessly hoisted aloft by such laughter, which carries partygoers away like a horse that sweeps the company one by one onto its back and goes galloping merrily through the house with its band of merry riders
- the indistinct murmur heard only during parties at home, with one shared happiness expressed in myriad dialogues, with the everyday compactness of domestic rooms feeling not "crowded" but "cozy", with the particular, patchwork bliss of people & voices thrown closely together (it is just the "phonograph room" itself that remains almost-empty, resulting perhaps from nervous or intimidated awe; the only guests brave enough dip inside are children made heedless by excitement and flirting couples made heedless by love)
- the contented sighs of a full house: creaking floorboards; door-hinges that chirp & croak; the swishing-past of skirts & tinkling of jewelry; the brisk footsteps of the eager hostess (who tends to kin, neighbors, local bigwigs, and folks just-passing-through, those whom the world honors and those as humble as the Christ-child in a manger, with the same bright, ready generosity & solicitude -- all alike are gestured toward a fire, offered delicacies, warmed with claret & rum punch or tea)
- free & frequent pouring, the clattering of cups, and the clinking of glasses, as toasts in endless succession are offered; no matter the beverage that is sipped, good cheer is imbibed along with it
- rattling platters & plates heaped with fruit, nuts, beef & ham sandwiches, lobster & oyster patties, sausage rolls, galantine of veal, mince pies, blancmanges & jellies, glasses of custard, jam tartlets, bonbons, cakes, and steamed puddings; the accompanying slicing, scooping, serving, and cracking-open
- alphabet blocks tumbled playfully and wooden trains pulled gleefully across carpet, as children frolic & delight in the freedom that comes when grown-ups are cheerfully occupied and children may at last leap with abandon into their own secret joys
- this town being too small & modest for the reckless ostentation of riding in an automobile on Christmas day, there is instead the frequent passing-by of carriages, sometimes adorned festively with jingling bells, as Christmas visitors arrive & depart, trotting through snow-dusted streets (each lane a tidy row of welcoming thresholds) with either the joy of expectation or the joy of hopes fulfilled
