- wind-chimes jingling from time to time in the slow, cool breezes, which carry the rainclouds on their gusts & flows with all the tenderness of a mother
- distant domestic animals who call & cry their notice of the rain, but not their protest: chickens, cows, and sheep who all prefer the cooling rain to their dry lodgings
- horses & oxen (adorned with bells) for whom the gentle shower offers no respite from work, bearing carts & riders through the rain
- terra-cotta pots sliding along wooden benches, which have been darkened & smoothed by the patina of the gardener's hands
- a basin of water used to wash soil from palms & fingernails, though the deep, living scent of it remains
- the piercing & digging of a garden trowel; the sound of hands moving through earth & loosening roots; the gardener's rhythm of pulling, plucking, placing, patting
- pouring gravel into the bottom of pots for drainage; concocting the perfect mixture of soil (pebbly, rich, dark, sandy) for each individual plant
- a mindful but unfussy rummaging through leaves & stems; the practiced snip of shears (gardening scissors) to prune, shape, tend, and encourage well-loved charges
- a watering can trickling over newly transplanted herbs & flowers
- perhaps, in some moments, the subtle stretching, crinkling, and creaking of the plants themselves growing
- the damp, slightly hurried footsteps and low chatter of occasional passersby
- the ancient bell of the village church chiming six o'clock (at 2:00:59)
