- one of the family's six children -- a little one -- entering the empty kitchen for "a drink of water", spying the cake beckoning from the table, and cutting a piece ever-so-quietly while glancing rapidly in all directions, as if these precautions alone will ensure that nobody will notice the missing slice, this precious, stolen snack consumed while standing in bare feet & nightshirt by the still-roaring fire (which is only temporarily unattended and thus increases the peril of the tiny thief); the whole family will remember with laughter, for years, this brief, moonlit repast relished with the gusto unique to treats grasped eagerly in two once-bare, now-chocolated hands
