- the clicking of wooden brush-handles as the perfect tool is chosen; the assiduous swishing and washing of bristles in turpentine or in water, the brushes having long ceased to look "new" but adopting instead the far better appearance of belongings used often and loved well
- the dance of charcoal and paper, alternately dizzyingly nimble or slowed into dreamy embrace, with the artist's true skill revealed in the way that blankness does not merely receive the line, the shade, but is instead partnered with them
- the rummaging-through and clinking of paints and pigments, of solvents and spirits, of pencils and pastels; the systematic opening-up of wooden drawers and pots and jars; the artist's determination to find just the right hue or medium, guided sometimes by noble ideal and sometimes seemingly by caprice
- the rustling of loose papers and sketchbook pages, as one draft after another is evaluated with both the freedom and the ruthless practicality of experimentation; everything irks or dissatisfies until the right idea announces its arrival and the whole world shuffles neatly into place
