Meteorite Men | S02 E03 | Monturaqui Crater and San Juan, Chile

Geoff's meteorite-hunting dream comes true during this second Chile adventure when the guys find their way to the Atacama Desert's remote Monturaqui Crater, and camp overnight on the floor of the spectacular 100,000 year-old impact site. After a personal tour of the giant mountaintop telescopes at the European Southern Observatory in Paranal, the guys get to grips with the puzzling and intriguing San Juan strewnfield — a site that seems to have produced more meteorites per square mile than any other location on Earth.

TRIVIA
[Exclusive notes by host Geoffrey Notkin]

"We were so far from civilization that this was one of only two 'MM' episodes where we actually had a cook in the field with us. The other was "Mundrabilla" Australia. What a simple and joyous luxury it was to enjoy a hot meal after a very long day of hunting in the chilly and windy mountains. It was the better part of a day's drive to the nearest small village, so our entire productiong crew pitched tents on the floor of ancient Monturaqui Crater. This was a serious expedition. It was winter in the Andes, and temperatues fell to 24 degrees below freezing at night. Before retiring to my tent, the mountaineering expert attached to our expedition told me to keep a water bottle in the sleeping bag with me. When I asked why, he replied: 'It will go far below freezing tonight. The air is very, very dry and you will wake up thirsty in the night. If your water bottle is outside your bag, it will freeze to a block of ice!' And he was totally right. Excellent advice, and a good reminder of why you should take a survival expert with you ... if you happen to be camping in the Andes in winter, which is not something I warmly recommend." 😉
