Vettel Reveals Why F1 Has Become “Sterile”

Sebastian Vettel is one of most experienced drivers in F1 currently and this year has been his worst showing since he became a full-time F1 driver as he currently sits 13th in the championship. Some feel that a big reason behind this is his underperforming car. Many have suggested that the cars play far too big of a role in F1 these days and Vettel has now given his take on this subject while speaking to Die Zeit

Vettel Expresses What Would Be Good For F1

Vettel began by stating that he wants to make a difference in the sport but cannot do that alone

“Well, I'm already convinced that I can make the difference. But I'm not alone either. To believe that would be presumptuous”

He then looked at the sort of sport F1 is and how much of a role the drivers play in it

“Formula 1 is a sport in which you are very dependent on technology. Of course, a driver can still make a difference. But in a world that is striving for ever greater perfection, it can be argued how large this proportion is”

He then shared his suggestion for what could be done to make F1 better

“Perhaps it would be good for Formula 1 if it wasn't always so perfect. It has become more and more sterile, especially when it comes to driving. Every centimeter is recorded with onboard cameras, the lines that we drive are recorded, we can compare, even across teams, with the GPS data”

He signed off by reflecting on his final few weeks with Ferrari

“I still have the ambition to make the best of it, also out of respect for the team. If we are not good enough, the work that is put into it from all sides is at least the same as in the case of success. But I admit it. If what you fought for in the past is no longer within reach, it is a different situation”

McLaren’s Carlos Sainz believes that “if you take [Lewis] Hamilton out of the competition, everyone in the current field would probably win in a Mercedes”

He added that this “describes very well what is happening in Formula 1 today, but also that Hamilton is one of the very best - even if he has the best car”

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner feels that “when something like Max [Verstappen] crashing on his out lap in Hungary happens... If there's a team that can get the car repaired on time and finish on the podium, it's” Red Bull

He jokingly added that his “guys can do that like no other. That's why” they “upset Toto Wolff”, Mercedes’, team principal “so much”

Williams’ George Russell feels that “if you want chaos and drivers who drive like idiots, you'd be better off watching another race class or sport” referring to the chaotic Turkish GP

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc added to that by saying that “these kinds of conditions shouldn't become the standard for Formula 1”

His teammate Sebastian Vettel, however, feels that its “true that” the drivers “can make more of the difference under such conditions” “because it's so slippery and” they're “driving at the limit”

James Key, technical director at McLaren has explained that “With a V8, the engines were all about the same size, with small differences in cooling. The architecture was simple”

As a result, ”it was easy to make an engine change” added Key

However, according to Key, “now the power source is integrated into the car. The geometry of the chassis is determined by multiple parts”

He further added that “whereas there used to be three or four cooling systems, there are now seven. There are many more things to consider when changing the engine”

Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo has reiterated that he “made the decision” to switch to McLaren “before the start of the season. So, it's largely thanks to the form McLaren showed last year”

He added that “there's a lot more to it, so it's a promising and exciting project”

He further stated that he has “to keep believing in it. Everyone thinks he is the best, but if” they “look in the mirror a little longer”, he doesn't “think every driver can keep that belief. But” he still believes in it
Is F1 technology too complicated?
