This set of training video shows you some of the amazing features that we can use in TED Talks.com. There are a number of features that make TED talks the ideal technology for the learning lots of different languages. Did you realise that you can play a video and control the speed? You can also access the subtitles so you can listen to a video and read it at the same time. You can also access the transcripts. There is also a search feature in TED talks which helps you access content on a mass of different subjects and in a mass of different languages. This really is a great resource.

The features that I most like in TED talks is the ability to be able to listen to a video and to be able to read the subtitles at the same time. This is a great way of learning languages and what I particularly like about TED talks is that you are learning very contemporary topics. Sometimes when we learn languages, we want to limit the amount of time that we watch a video, so we don’t want to watch videos that are 2030 minutes long. The great thing about the TED talks website is that you can choose to watch videos that are very short for example between 1-6 minutes, this is ideal for language learning. I also used TED talks a lot for the flipped classroom, so I give students videos to watch at home and to take notes on and then do exercises in the class that get them to practice and use the language.

Don't think that all the TED talks are about technology. If you look under the topics you'll see that there's a whole mass of different types of topics that do cover many areas of life. I've used them for a variety of different things particularly getting students to have discussions for debates, for gathering information etc. I've even done exercises where I've got my students to do their own TED talks after watching TED talks themselves. It really is a great language learning resource that we can use in a variety of different ways.

It is also possible to slow down the speed of the videos. So for example you can play a video at 75% speed and this can be really useful for language learners that are perhaps of a lower level and struggle to understand the speed of the delivery and the vocabulary. I also like to take the transcripts and use the transcripts to create different language learning exercises. So for example I often copy the vocabulary from the transcripts and I use it to create language learning activities perhaps gap fill, comprehension questions etc You can even link using the translations and transcripts with Google translator and this way you can actually practice the vocabulary and hear the audio and even transfer the words into to quizlet.

In this quick video I cover all these key features and you will see that TED talks is a great resource for language learning and many different languages and with a little bit of creativity we can use this website in lots of different ways. It's useful because it's a great website to recommend the students, that they can use at home to study the language but also a website that you as the teacher can use in the class with your students to help them learn languages. I have used TED talks in both ways. I often watch TED talks in Spanish with the subtitles and this helps me with my Spanish and keeps me practicing it.
