Socrative is a great tool if you're looking to get your students engaged while learning online. Socrative is really easy to use. You can simply get your students to login with their telephones and you can screen share the information so that the students can see how they are progressing. In this video I'm going to take you right through Socrative so that you can use it in a completely online teaching situation. I will show you both the quiz mode of Socrative and also the space race mode of Socrative.

The basic idea of Socrative is that it can be used to for formative testing. So for example after teaching the students something, you can play a Socrative quiz or game and see if the students have understood your content. Most of the time Socrative is used in the classroom with the students but it is possible to teach and use it online. All you need to do if you work online is to get the students to access the quiz via their telephones.

This video will show you exactly what to do so you will understand what you need to screen share and what you need to do with the students so they can access the game that you play by telephone. I show you how to actually produce the quizzes and how to make the questions. Remember you can play any Socrative in the quiz mode in the space race mode.

I like Socrative because I use it often at the beginning of a lesson to check student’s understanding, sometimes at the end of a lesson to check whether they understood or sometimes in a revision session if I want to see what the students need to focus on and practice in preparation for an exam.

There are some you really useful settings when working with Socrative to. For example when you are playing a game you can reveal who is answering the questions I'm at warp speed. You can also reveal if the students have got the answers correct or incorrect. Finally at the end of the activity you can go over the results and see exactly who got which questions correct. This can be really useful information if you're trying to teach a lesson I want to build up an understanding of what your students have understood.

Teaching online can be very difficult because it's hard to understand what the students are understanding. So secretive is the ideal tool for testing their understanding of the content. The other big advantage is that it has a gaming element that means that it's very popular with students, easy to play and a lot of fun.
