BOY GEORGE Keep Me In Mind (NOT ON CD) MINI-ALBUM +bonus tracks!

"Keep Me In Mind" was the second single released from Boy George's first solo album "Sold". Released in April 1987 (and May in Japan), it reached #29 in the UK charts, a considerable drop from the #1 position it's predecessor, "Everything I Own". The single did better in some European countries, reaching #5 in Italy and #21 in Ireland, but only #55 in Germany. It did not chart in Japan.

George describes the song as the "most American sounding" song on the album, and all at Virgin anticipated another hit, and spent quite a lot on promotion, including a video shoot in Barbados and multiple TV interviews and performances.

The song itself is a breezy, bouncy pop flavored number that could be interpreted as an apologetic lover who finds it difficult to say the right words at the right time. "Don't forget me if I make mistakes" is a theme that could be applied to the state of George's personal and professional life at the time. It was written with Glen Nightingale and Jocelyn Brown, the former being the musical director for the album and 1987 tour, the latter having worked extensively with Culture Club in 1985 and 1986.

The single was released on a variety of formats: 7" and 12" of course, but also a maxi-cassette single (the first single George released in that format in the UK, although "Everything I Own" had cassette singles in North America and France.), and a 12" picture disc with an oversized poster. Both of these collectible formats included a bonus version of "Everything I Own", although the 12" included the album mix, the cassette included the single version. The artwork on the 12" caused a bit of a controversy, as it depicted George officiating at a nudist wedding. Although a contact at Virgin America offered this excuse as why they didn't want to release the record, it was more likely that the poor chart performance in the UK was to blame.

The B-sides were a bit of a Culture Club reunion, featuring a re-worked version of the "From Luxury To Heartache" track "I Pray" with a completely different set of lyrics and arrangement. Gone is the sleek, pop-soul R&B elements and instead we have a track much more rock oriented than anything George had released since "Miss Me Blind". The promo 12" gave this track the mix title "Dutch Version", which has caused some speculation that this is NOT a remix, but rather the 1985 DEMO version of "I Pray", because some of the earliest sessions for the "From Luxury To Heartache" album were recorded in Holland, giving meaning to the "Dutch" version. That mix title was dropped from the commercial releases.

The other B-side, "State Of Love", was written by George, Roy Hay and Phil Pickett, and sounds as if it could have fit nicely on "From Luxury To Heartache" as well. It was extended for the 12", as the A-side track was not. A fourth song, "That Forgotten Guy" was written and recorded for inclusion on this release, but for reasons unknown that idea was scrapped- but it was possibly due to chart restrictions as to what actually is eligible for chart placement, sales of a four track EP would not count towards single sales. Sadly, "That Forgotten Guy" remains forgotten, and has never been released.
