A (New) Day in the Life of a Baby Albino Elephant — Part 2 | Magnificent Tender Moments
We are excited to share these beautiful scenes of Khanyisa and the herd with you in this second part of a gorgeous day out in the bush! Jabulani and Khanyisa get stuck into a tree's delicious bark, with Jabulani kindly and patiently stepping aside to let the little calf take over.
We are actively trying to protect some of the trees in the reserve from debarking by both the rescued herd and the wild elephants and are looking to start setting up beehives to assist in protecting the trees. While there will still be many trees that are freely available to these bark-loving pachyderms, we need to ensure that the reserve isn't overgrazed and that we protect the trees to elephant ratio from decimating the tree life in the reserve.
The constant management of the land and vegetation in the reserve is vital and a large part of our work and purpose of some of our fundraising initiatives as the health of the reserve and the diversity of the ecosystems means to survival of not only the elephants but all the animals who depend on the land and one another to thrive.
Klaserie and Khanyisa enjoy a most beautiful and heartwarming moment together, with the allomother getting very trunks-on with the calf, and Khanyisa happily enjoying the attention. Bubi stays close too and later grand dominant bull Sebakwe moves in to take Jabulani's place.
In an amazing yet bittersweet conincidence, both Jabulani and Khanyisa are orphans who were rescued and brought into our care when only 4 months old - the exact same age. as such, it is amazing to look at Jabulani now and compare him to the little albino now 2-year-old Khanyisa. Jabulani towers over here but the two are growing and thriving side by side in the protection and support of their big blended herd. Adine has known both elephants since they were two years old and considers them her family.
It seems impossible to keep the elephants away from the delicious tree of bark bounty as the herd move in, including Limpopo, Kumbura, Lundi, and Bubi standing to the side. It's a hot day in the bush and the elephants fan their great big ears constantly to keep cool
Next up - in part three, we head to the dam!
