Save the Elephant Day - Orphan albino elephant Khanyisa's three month rehabilitation
"Save an Elephant" Day - What a perfect day to reflect upon Khanyisa's three months since she was saved.
We will never forget getting that call, that there was a baby elephant that was rescued, she was in a terrible condition from being trapped in a snare for days, and dehydrated. Then to be told she is an albino too. Our hearts dropped, how did this little elephant survive all on her own?
In the three months since that day, her beautiful spirit and tenacity have continued to inspire us. Not only has she overcome the physical trauma inflicted by a heartless snare, but she has shown immense strength through her emotional trauma too.
Over the past two weeks, Adine has started the slow integration process with the Jabulani Herd, working with our trusted expert elephant advisors along the way. We introduced Khanyisa to Jabulani, as he showed a lot of interest in her wellbeing. From there we introduced her to her new adoptive mom, Lundi, also known as the "great aunt of the Jabulani Herd". Lundi has one baby of her own, who is ten years old. The Matriarch, Tokwe has two of her own, and also two orphaned elephants under her wing, so we felt it would be a better idea to have Lundi step up and have some more responsibility too.
One must keep in mind that wild herds, as a rule, do not accept elephants outside of their herd, join. So it is an incredible experience to see love and acceptance that Lundi has shown little Khanyisa.
What an incredible three months it has been!
Thank you for everyone that has supported us!
We have introduced Khanyisa to another two elephants, who do you think it could be? We will share more about that tomorrow!
Please consider donating towards Khanyisa's and HERD's costs on "Save our Elephant" day. We have options to donate or to foster Khanyisa:
