dear dad,

is my happiness a burden to you?
is the gender of whom I fall in love with, an embarrassment for you?

if i muster up the courage to come out to you today and tell you, “dad, i’m gay,” will you wish i didn’t say, these three words to you?

will you yell at me? frown at me? and turn your eyes away?

dad, if one day, I decide to marry a boy, would you come to my wedding?
would you share this news with your brothers and sisters?
would you be happy for me?

or, is my happiness a burden to you?

something to hide, to keep unspoken. behind closed doors, in a… closet.

dad, i don’t think i can live the life we thought i would.
even though i did almost everything mom said i should.

i got straight A’s, i practiced piano.
i went to church, i held recitals.
i graduated from an ivy league.
and now i make a salary.

but what if one day I bring home a boy…
would you be ashamed of me?

would all my accomplishments count for nothing?

dad, I don’t expect you to relate to my years of struggle and self-hate.
of wishing I liked girls and asking God to be straight.

i don’t expect you to know about the bullies i faced,
who punched me for being girly and called me names.

i hid those memories, and buried them away.
i hid my pain because i felt... shame.

but i’ve finally faced what i feared the most
i’ve accepted who i am at my very core.

yet, i’m still afraid.
i’m afraid that this will be too much for you.
i’m afraid the way i want to live will embarrass you.

dad…
is my happiness a burden to you?
