Michiko Sunahara - "Che tua madre" MADAMA BUTTERFLY (Puccini) 1969

The Japanese soprano, Michiko Sunahara, was born in 1923 in Hiroshima and made her debut in La boheme as a member of the Fujiwara Opera Company. She performed the title role in Madama Butterfly for almost two years at the Opera Comique in Paris. Her recorded voice was heard on the soundtrack of the 1962 Paramount film "My Geisha" - singing excerpts from Madama Butterfly. In 1969, she performed the role for Opera Australia in Sydney in a problematic and heavily criticised production. Her colleagues in that cast included the Welsh tenor, David Parker, as Pinkerton, Justine Rettick as Suzuki and Ronald Maconaghie as Sharpless (who is heard in a few phrases in this live audio capture from Act II). From Her Majesty’s Theatre, Sydney, on June 14th, 1969, we hear Michiko Sunahara in Cio Cio San's "Che tua madre dovrà prenderti in braccio" with the Elizabethan Theatre Trust Orchestra conducted by William Reid.
